Chainsaws, while useful as tools, can be very dangerous if used improperly. After all, chainsaws combine a motorized belt and multiple sharp cutting edges, both of which represent potential hazards. That’s why the experts here at Lawn Land have created this list of chainsaw safety tips.

Read the Owner’s Manual

Always fully read the owner’s manual before attempting to use a chainsaw. The manual will contain invaluable safety information and instructions pertaining to your specific model, so keep it close at hand. If you can’t find the owner’s manual, check the manufacturer’s website for an electronic copy.

Dress Appropriately

Safe chainsaw operation requires certain safety gear. This includes both ear and eye protection, as well as long sleeved clothing, work gloves, and closed-toe shoes. It’s also important to dress in only tight-fitting clothes, as looser clothing can get caught in your chainsaw’s blade.

Perform Regular Chainsaw Inspections

Inspect your chainsaw before each usage. Make sure that the chain has enough tension, and top off the fluid levels when they get low. You should also examine the cutting bar to see if there are any signs that it has become worn or damaged. Address any maintenance concerns immediately so that they don’t have a chance to get worse.

Avoid Kickback

Kickback is when your chainsaw’s cutting bar meets an obstacle that it can’t slice through, resulting in the cutting bar kicking backwards. Since this occurrence is obviously very dangerous, you’ll want to do what you can to reduce your chances of experiencing kickback. The easiest way to do this is by regularly sharpening the chain and checking the tension. Gripping the chainsaw firmly with both hands is also important, as is not cutting anything using the tip of the cutting bar.
